Monthly Update September/October 2011 Approved by government in July 2011, the Swindon & Wiltshire LEP has been formed to develop the economy of the sub-region. Its primary focus is to create wealth, jobs and new business opportunities by forging a meaningful partnership between the private and public sectors. The Working Group of leading business people is driving the process of making the Partnership a reality and has an ambition to have a fully formed and operational model in place by the end of January 2012. September/October Activity The Business Working Group has quickly moved into action, identifying the short-term priorities that the Partnership needs to focus on for the next 3-4 months. The second formal meeting of the Group agreed a work programme that will drive the structure, ready for the Board to refine in the New Year. Key actions in place are:-
Board recruitment – the process has now been signed off and the recruitment drive will be formally launched on 7 November 2011. The LEP will use all its partner networks to get as full a coverage as possible and this will be supported by a targeted media campaign. The application pack can be accessed via the web or hard copies obtained from the Secretariat, WSEP or Forward Swindon. Primary web-sites to use are:-
Building the Profile of the LEP – Establishing the LEP as the ‘independent’ voice of /conduit for Business is a critical success factor and building awareness within the business community will be key. The focus, therefore, is on putting in place a web-site dedicated to the LEP. A decision will be taken at the November BWG meeting on which web design company will undertake this work – the ambition being to have a site ‘live’ by the end of November. Domain name : www.swlep.biz
Developing plans for much wider business engagement / input – if the LEP is to successfully engage, and retain interest from, the business community in its plans to grow the economy it needs to ensure that it has all the right communication channels in place to make that happen. Clearly the web-site will be core to this – however the Working Group is still actively seeking feedback/thoughts from the wider community on how this can be best achieved.
Work Programme – the BWG will use the November meeting to identify key priorities and establish what economic research/intelligence ‘gaps’ there are to ensure that the decisions made on which initiatives to support are objective & evidence-based. |
